In the end of June 2001 I started a project which has the title "2500 metres".
I took a slow walk from my home close to Telefonplan to my darkroom in Gröndal. The distance as the crows fly is about 2500 metres, but I walked along the existing roads. Every 100th step I took a photograph towards the way I was walking, the photographs was taken with one week interval.
Since the distance is about 5000 steps I took one photograph every week during approximately one year. In this way I slowly transported myself through the suburbs of southern Stockholm, both in time and space.
It became a slow Odyssey through areas I have been working within before and I regularly stopped and watch my surroundings. I came across ordinary environments, where the objects I have been focusing on before, and other phenomena, was common.
I started the journey just after midsummer and reached my destination at the same time one year later. When I was the furthest away both from my home and my place of work it was at the darkest time of the year. Therefore this became a representation or a transport both in mind and space. The final result is a series of 47 colourphotographs, shown as a projection, similar to the one shown here. The work is also presented with a map, showing the way I walked. |
