98 ELSKÅP

What we call electrical boxes is a necessity for our daily life, because they are in some way connected with the electrical supply system. These electrical boxes amount to a considerable number of mystical boxes in our neighbourhood. I have chosen to visualise these everyday objects by photographing them with a scientific method. The work "98 electrical boxes" consists of 94 black and white prints, size 24 x 24 cm. Each photograph shows one electrical box, in some exceptions two, when they are situated next to each other. I have looked up every electrical box within a circle, with the radius of 500 meters, and photographed them. The centre of the circle was my home during my studies in Göteborg (1998-2000). The apartment was situated in a suburban area with both villas and flats, a major part of the area is used as for recreation activities. The work is exhibited with a map, size 30 x 34 cm, of the area, where all electrical boxes are marked out. The electrical boxes are the static element and recurrent object in the photographs, while the background varies and gives a description of the area. With a closer look at the electrical boxes you discover a large variation in form and size. The objects are not unique for the chosen area, but can be seen as representatives for suburban areas I have chosen to work within. I want to describe the area through the photographs and focus on phenomenon and objects we normally do not observe and through them give a new perspective on our closest neighbourhood. The work has been exhibited at Hasselblad Center, Göteborg in April/May 2000 and at The Finnish Institute Gallery, Stockholm in September 2000. Parts of the work has also been exhibited at Hasselblad Center in September/October 2001.
